Regional and agricultural geocryology, permafrost geoecology:
- Land reclamation in permafrost regions, effect of reclamation activities on the surface energy balance
- Reclamation of abandoned arable lands
- Permafrost hydrothermal regimes under different irrigation practices
- Control and prediction of soil hydrothermal regimes
- Formation of thermokarst and other cryogenic landforms in agricultural lands on ice-rich permafrost
Permafrost landscapes
- Soil hydrothermal regimes in permafrost areas in relation to climate change and anthropogenic influence
- Radiation balance in different landscape types of Central Yakutia
Current and Recent Projects
- SB RAS Basic Research Project IX.127.2.3, 2017-2020: Integrated Studies to Understand the Dynamics of Natural and Human-Affected Landscapes in the East Siberian Permafrost Region
- Collaborative project with the Research Institute for Global Change (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology): Land Surface Observation of Heat/Water/Vegetation Conditions in Yakutia, 1996-2014.

- Dr. Ugarov has supervised 12 students completing specialist’s degree programs at the Yakutsk State University, Department of Geography and Department of Hydrogeology. In recent years, he has been actively involved in outreach activities for middle and high school students.
