Seed Repository in Permafrost

The Melnikov Permafrost Institute has completed construction of an underground repository at Yakutsk intended to store seeds under stable subzero temperatures. The facility with a storage area of 90 sq. m lies in permafrost at a depth of 9.15 m from the surface. Reliant on the natural cold only, it will provide safe and cost-effective long-term storage of seeds.
