Gavrilova and Bosikov Memorial Unveiled

The distinguished figures in Yakutia’s science and culture, Dr. Maria Gavrilova and her husband Vasily Bosikov, have been commemorated with a memorial plaque installed at the Prospekt Lenina apartment house where they lived from 2000 to 2011. The memorial was unveiled on 29 May 2015 at a ceremony attended by city officials, colleagues, and family members. Gavrilova worked at the Permafrost Institute from her graduation from High School of Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory in Leningrad in 1958 to her death in November 2010. She was internationally recognized for her studies on cold climates and permafrost. Gavrilova was the first to conduct complete microclimatic and surface energy balance observations in various physiographic regions. She organized ten year-round and over forty seasonal stations in western, eastern and southern Siberia, as well as in the Russian Far East and in Mongolia.
