The Organizing Committee is pleased to invite young researchers, as well as university and post-graduate students to the Third Forum for Young Permafrost Scientists commemorating the 140th birthday of M.I. Sumgin. The Forum will be held in Yakutsk, Russia from 24 June to 13 July 2013.

In 2013 there will be the 140th birthday of the founder of geocryology, Prof. M.I. Sumgin. His name is linked with the first fundamental results in the early years of permafrost science. His activities were diverse and intense – he took an active part in the founding of the USSR Academy of Sciences Commission on Permafrost Research and the Obruchev Permafrost Institute in Moscow, organized several expeditions, authored many scientific and popular books, as well as research papers on permafrost, consulted a number of construction projects in permafrost areas. Sumgin founded his scientific school and many of his pupils have become eminent in the Russian permafrost science, including N.A. Tsytovich, P.F. Shvetsov, V.A. Kudryavtsev, S.P. Kachurin, V.F. Tumel, and P.I. Melnikov. A persistent researcher, Sumgin significantly contributed to the establishment and development of permafrost science in Yakutia. He had great faith in the future of geocryology.
